This PowerPoint is designed as a ‘step by step’ guide to support Guidance Counsellors and their students to create and share a Europass profile, CV and Cover Letter, for the purposes of seeking work experience / employment.

Through the skills gained in this lesson, the students will be able to:

  • Produce their own professional profile and CV- highlighting their qualifications, skills, personal qualities, interests and experiences, of interest to potential employers.
  • Understand the nature and purpose of a cover letter
  • Produce an effective cover letter
  • Know how to share digitally their newly created profile, CV and cover letter with potential employers

European Schools - THE 'CAO'

The Central Applications Office (CAO) centrally processes applications for entry to the first year of undergraduate courses in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Republic of Ireland. It also issues offers to applicants, when instructed to do so by HEIs, and records acceptances. The CAO processes, on behalf of the HEIs, school-leavers presenting qualifications from other EU/EFTA countries as well as applications from Irish school-leavers presenting Leaving Certificate qualifications.

Below you will find 5 x documents that will assist you in making your application to the CAO.

The CAO system explained
This resource gives an overview of the Irish 'Central Applications Office' (CAO), the point system, a list of useful resources, timetable for events and some frequently asked questions from EB students related to applying to the CAO.

'Applying to CAO' (2020)

This resource, from the CAO,  provides information on the purpose of the CAO, the application process, the 'CAO Handbook', HEI Prospectuses and lots more.

Additional CAO documentation (EU Applicants)
This resource outlines the documents generally necessary for EU applicants when applying to the CAO.

'Do's and Dont's'
This simple document has been compiled by the CAO to remind student of what to do and not do when applying through the CAO. 
It is particularly useful to s7 students to consult in preparation for a CAO application.

'Dates and Tips' (2020)
This resource has a handy visual timeline of key dates in the CAO application process, as well as helpful tips for applicants.

European Schools - EB v Irish Leaving Certificate - Worked Examples

These documents give students and parents an insight into how the EB is evaluated in comparison to the Leaving Certificate. 
You will note that TCD (Trinity College Dublin) operate a different system to most other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) (see example).

The process and equivalent points allocated change annually.

How to create your Europass Profile

Europass is a set of online tools to help users communicate their skills, qualifications and experiences and manage their career in a fast-changing world.  
The new Europass offers a range of online ‘e-Portfolio’ tools and information for people of all ages, to manage their learning and career.  
Guidance Counsellors can use Europass to support students and clients to:  

  • Create a free personal profile  
  • Highlight skills, qualifications and experiences  
  • Create CVs and cover letters  
  • Explore different job and learning opportunities around Europe (in progress)  
  • Find trusted national information and contact points on working and learning in Europe  

As part of the new Europass, the Commission has also worked with 18 countries to pilot Europass Digital Credentials, which are authentic, tamper-proof digital credentials (e.g. qualifications, diplomas, certificates).  

Students who complete their Europass profile can use it as one of the criteria to achieve ‘Euro-Quest Ambassador’ status

It can also use be used as a basis for entry to the ‘Careers with Languages’ competition. 

Euroguidance Ireland have created the following short video to assist students / Guidance Counsellors through the steps required to complete their (i) profile, (ii) CV and (iii) Cover letter
