Amplifying the voices of students with disabilities in transition preparation and transition planning

Research in Guidance webinar with Dr. Leanne Connolly, Dublin City University

This presentation explores recent PhD research which aimed to explore the experiences of key stakeholders involved in transition preparation and transition planning for students leaving Special Schools in the Republic of Ireland. This research employed an adaptation of the Mosaic Approach (Rogers & Boyd, 2020) to capture the views of students with intellectual disabilities in a special school on the vision for their life post-school. Using this creative methodology, the students showcased their vision through the creation of Mosaic Maps, which were then showcased to their parents and teachers for discussion.

This presentation will address the following:
– Post-school goals of students with intellectual disabilities in Irish special schools
– Teachers’ perceptions of post-school planning
– Ways of capturing student voice of young people with intellectual disabilities and/or communication differences
– Re-conceptualising work experience as a key transition preparation activity
