European Day of Languages Competition

Whatever the dream, it’s always useful to have a language to take you there! We invite pupils, with the help of their language teacher and guidance counsellor, to apply for their dream job in the country where the language they are learning is spoken. Pupils simply put together a cover letter and Europass CV in the language they are learning. Teachers select one entry per class to submit, and two winning classes (one each from Junior and Senior cycle) will win a trip to a European country to explore the dream career path!

This year’s competition supported by the National Centre for Guidance in Education / Euroguidance and Léargas.

The maximum prize value per school is €2,150 and the deadline is 27 October 2017.

PREVIOUS COMPETITIONS

2016 Competition: ‘Climate Change in…’

In 2016 we asked pupils, with the help of their language and geography teachers, to report on the effects of Climate Change in a country where the language they’re learning is spoken. The winners were the Third Year students of Christian Brothers’ College in Cork, who wrote about climate change close to home. Read about their winning entry and the many others we received. As their prize the school will visit an environmental project in Ireland shortly.

2015 Competition: ‘A Day in the Life…’

In 2015 we asked pupils, with the help of their language and history teachers, to choose a historical figure who would have spoken the language the pupil is learning.  Each pupil wrote a diary entry for a day in the life of their chosen person, using that language.

The winning entry came from Lucan Community College, and stood out because of the care and attention paid to all aspects of the diary. Students imagined days in the life of holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental, and presented them in a hand-made book. The prize was for one language and one history teacher to take a group of pupils to a European city, and the school chose to visit Bruges, Belgium. Read more about the competition and the winners.

2014 Competition: ‘Afternoon Tea’

The 2014 competition involved team-teaching between language teachers and home economics teachers. Pupils were asked to create and document a typical afternoon tea from an area where the language they are studying is spoken. Well over 1,000 pupils were involved in the competition and their enthusiasm was very evident from the entries. The first prize went to St Marys College in Co. Wicklow for this wonderful array of baked goods: “Le Goûter / Tae Beag / Kaffee und Kuchen“. The second prize went to Wilson’s Hospital School, Co. Westmeath for their instructional video on how to make scones in Spanish (and wash up afterwards):“Escones para la merienda“.
